Rolling hills, winding trails and lush gardens are the backdrop for the upcoming “Butterfly Release for Peace” to be hosted by Women’s Resources of Monroe County. The event will bring awareness to the charitable mission to end domestic and sexual violence in our community.
“This first of its kind event recognizes hope and healing, freedom and remembrance of a loved one or survivor of abuse through a beautiful release of butterflies,” states Jennifer Grube, Executive Director of Women’s Resources of Monroe County. Community members may sponsor butterflies in advance for $15 each. Sponsors and event attendees will have the opportunity to release a butterfly in honor of their loved one.
The live Monarch butterflies will be released as a memory and celebration of your loved ones life. The Monarch butterfly is perhaps the best known of all North American butterflies. Its wings feature an easily recognizable orange and black pattern, with a wingspan of 3½–4 in. The Monarch is famous for its southward migration and northward return in summer from Canada to Mexico and Baja California which spans the life of three to four generations of the butterfly.
Many people believe that butterflies symbolize spirit, representing freedom and beauty as they take flight. When we experience the vital connection between butterflies and nature, we tend to instinctively feel that peace and harmony are truly around us. (From www.butterflymemorials.com)
This family friendly event will be conducted at Grand Central Landfill’s Environmental Education Center in Pen Argyl. Event guests will enjoy light refreshments and will be able to hike a network of trails through acres of wildflowers and other native vegetation in the center’s wildlife habitat area.
“Grand Central and Waste Management are proud to host this event and support Women’s Resources of Monroe County and its important work,” said Scott Perin, landfill manager. “Our education center and habitat are a perfect venue for the butterfly release.” |
